Thanks to the long, hard work of frontline community leaders, youth climate activists, scientists, and other advocates, the Biden administration has temporarily paused all pending permits for exports of liquified natural gas (LNG) from export terminals until the climate and environmental impacts can be fully evaluated. This is good news for local communities and our climate!
However, fossil fuel industry allies in Congress are now attempting to reverse this progress with H.R. 1130, the so-called "Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2023," which would strip away the current requirement that the Department of Energy must make a finding that an LNG export project is in the public interest before it is approved.
If enacted, the bill would severely limit the federal government's ability and responsibility to examine the full impacts of LNG expansion on the economy, consumer energy costs, the climate, and local communities. This would be a grave injustice to the frontline communities affected by pollution from LNG facilities and would revoke the Department of Energy's ability to evaluate how new LNG export projects contribute to accelerating the climate crisis.
Write today and urge your member of Congress to oppose a legislative giveaway to the fossil fuel industry.
