Improve the Environment Right Here in Bellingham
Thursday, September 19th, Bellingham Parks Bucket Brigade!
Register Here:
Information:
NOTE: If you have never submitted the New Volunteer Registration (even if you've volunteered with us before), please complete that first!
At this work party, you will be helping water hundreds of tree seedlings planted by WMTP volunteers the past few years in Bellingham Parks: Cordata, Squalicum Creek, and Julianna Park.
We'll start at Cordata Park main entrance at 8:00 AM sharp. A city parks employee will be driving a water truck, and filling 5 gallon of buckets to ~half-full. Your assistance is needed to carry the water out to all the trees, to help keep them growing through the hot, dry season! Once the watering is complete at the first park, everyone will proceed to Squalicum Creek Park, then Julianna Park. There will be about a 30-40 minute break between each location while the truck is refilled.
Last year, our volunteer teams were able to complete all 3 parks before 1:00PM. However, the duration at each location can vary depending on how many volunteers there are. We'll send change updates via text during the event, so if you need to join later or take an extended break, you'll know where to go next to join or rejoin the group.
*Note that each participant will need to sign a liability waiver form before starting work*
If you have any questions, feel free to send us an email at volunteering@whatcommilliontrees.org
Saturday, August 24th, 9AM-12PM Rutsatz Salmon Reserve Blackberry Tackle with Whatcom Land Trust

Information:
NOTE: If you have never submitted the New Volunteer Registration (even if you've volunteered with us before), please complete that first!
We're partnering with Whatcom Land Trust to help with restoration work at their Rutsatz Salmon Reserve* property along the Nooksack River. At this work party, you will be removing blackberry vines and digging up roots from around young trees, increasing their survival rate, and clearing the way for additional future tree-planting. Healthy forest along the banks of the Nooksack River is vital to the health and reproduction of salmon.
Note that participants will also need to sign WLT's Volunteer Waiver
(unless you've signed it within the past year), even if you have already signed WMTP's. You can sign it at the event before starting work, or print it and bring it with you already signed.
Some details may not yet be finalized, so look out for an email from us a couple days in advance with information on where to park, where we're meeting, and what other amenities may be available.
*Property Description
Rutsatz Salmon is a 71-acre tract of land located between the North Fork Nooksack River and the Rutsatz Road in Eastern Whatcom County. The property includes a 30-acre pasture, 25 acres of young woodland, and 15 acres of actively moving river channel with about 1,700 feet of river frontage. About 90% of the property is with the 100-year floodplain of the Nooksack River.
If you have any questions, feel free to send us an email at volunteering@whatcommilliontrees.org

More information about this opportunity:
Why do we install these materials to just have to return and remove them? Young saplings are fragile and there are many things that can damage or kill them after plantings. Blue tubes protect the trunks from being eaten by voles and ensure that maintenance crews don’t accidentally cut or mow over them. Cages keep deer and beavers from eating and gnawing on newly installed maples and cedars. Even once they are big and tall, some trees need cages throughout their lives due to high beaver activity in certain areas. These materials help increase the success and survival rate of restoration projects. Now that many of our sites are reaching over 5, 10, and 20 years old, it’s time to return and provide some upkeep.

Make sure to arrive at NSEA’s campus by 8 AM the day of!
Information:
Wrap up the Spring work party season with NSEA as we tend to this freshly planted site along Macaulay Creek! Plus, celebrate World Fish Migration Day by planting trees and shrubs for salmon.
Parking for this event is at the Mount Baker Senior High School at 4936 Deming Rd, Deming, WA 98244.
Once you park, head to the sign-in station to get checked in and then staff will direct you to the shuttle bus that will take you to the site. Most of time, we can get you on the shuttle and to the site within 10 minutes, but sometimes you may be asked to wait if the shuttle is already dropping off another group. Thanks for your patience!
NSEA provides everything you need to participate, but here are some other things to keep in mind:
Any necessary tools, instructions, and gardening gloves are provided (XS-XL sizes available).
Most sites are wet even if it is not raining so bringing water-resistant/proof layers will keep you more comfortable.
Closed-toed shoes are required, and we recommend ones that can get dirty (because they will!)
A portable toilet will be available at sites that do not have public restrooms.
We strive to provide coffee, water, and light snacks at each event, but if you have additional dietary needs, please bring those with you.
A reusable coffee cup and water bottle are highly recommended to keep these events as waste free as possible!
If you have questions about this event or others, please contact Sarah at sbrown@n-sea.org or call 360-715-0283.
