America's appalling food waste offers opportunities, for feeding the hungry, for cutting emissions, and for saving individuals money. Food waste costs the US $408 billion each year—about 2% of GDP—and accounts for about 4% of US greenhouse gas emissions. Organic waste in landfills is the third largest source of methane in the US, accounting for 15% of human methane emissions in the US. By taking action on food waste, we can create jobs and economic opportunity while feeding the food insecure.
Join with members of Elders Climate Action in demanding that Congress take action on food waste in the 2023-2028 Farm Bill, which is expected to be funded at $648 billion and determine food and farm climate policy for the next five years. The solutions we call for can generate $73 billion in annual net financial benefit, recover the equivalent of 4 billion meals for food insecure individuals, save 4 trillion gallons of water, and avoid 75 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
