The U.S. government has a responsibility to consider and protect people when making key decisions — and it's failing when it comes to protecting us from fossil fuels. For too long federal agencies like the U.S. Department of Energy have approved toxic fossil fuel projects without comprehensively considering how those projects will hurt our health, families, neighborhoods, energy prices or futures.
The department must fulfill its legal mandate and consider us before approving dangerous fossil fuel projects.
In January the department took a step in the right direction when it announced it would pause authorizations for new projects to export liquified natural gas, or LNG. Now it needs to update its approval process by taking a hard look at how LNG exports affect environmental justice, public health, domestic energy costs, wildlife and the climate. In doing so, the department will be forced to deny all future LNG export applications.
The government should protect and serve us.
Tell the Department of Energy to consider people when evaluating new LNG projects — and urge it to reject new fossil fuel projects that harm people, wildlife and the planet.
