Find ways to get around without adding greenhouse gases to the environment!

Biking

Biking is a fast, efficient, and sustainable mode of transport. Western is an incredibly bike-able campus, too! With numerous bike racks around campus and bike lanes around Bellingham, it’s never been easier to reap all the health and environmental benefits of biking. In fact, choosing to bike instead of use a car just once a day can cut your emissions by 67%.

Walking

Walking is also a super environmentally friendly way of getting around! WWU campus is less than a mile long and is also incredibly close to downtown Bellingham and the Sehome Village Shopping Center. Walking improves physical and mental health while mitigating the effects of climate change.

Bussing

Taking the bus instead of driving a car massively reduces CO2 emissions and gas consumption, as well as reducing congestion on the road. WWU students get free WTA bus rides using their student card, too! There are also cheap, long distance busses you can take to get places like Seattle.

Trains

It can be complicated to determine whether or not a train or car is better for the environment, especially when you consider the new prevalence of electric cars. However, some of Bellingham’s trains are already electric, and since one train can carry many passengers, it will produce fewer emissions than if everyone took their own gas-powered car.

Get Creative!

Skateboarding, roller skating, and unicycling, though uncommon, are also environmentally friendly means of transportation. If hitting an ollie is your jam, or you enjoy juggling while riding around campus, know that you’re also supporting the planet!

Electric Transport

For travelling distances that are too long for a regular walk or bike ride, try out an electric form of transport! Electric bikes, scooters, and skateboards can give you the boost you need while avoiding the emissions of gas powered cars. If you do need a car, electric ones are by far the more environmentally friendly choice (though there are a lot of myths out there about EV’s).
