Information:
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is proposing to downgrade wolves from “endangered” to a less-protective “sensitive” status under the state's endangered species law. That would place more wolves — and their full recovery, across the state and beyond — at risk.
The department tried to do the same thing last year. Thanks to comments by supporters like you, it was unsuccessful.
Now it's trying again — so we need to raise our voices again.
This proposal virtually guarantees that more wolves will suffer and die. If it's finalized, it will let Washington issue more kill permits to livestock owners. It will reduce the penalties for illegally slaughtering and trapping wolves, emboldening wolf poachers to poach even more. It will make it easier for the state to approve logging and road construction near known dens, where mother wolves give birth and pups grow up. And it will let ranchers injure and harass wolves, basically without limit — even when it results in death.
Besides all that, this proposal completely ignores the requirements of the state wolf plan and isn't based on sound biology.
It's terrible for wolves. But if the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission approves this proposal, all its consequences will become reality.
Speak up now to defend wolves. Tell the commission to vote “no” on the proposal to downgrade wolves' state protection.
