Information:

You may have heard the heartbreaking new announcement from NOAA Fisheries: The North Atlantic right whale calf seen off South Carolina's coast in January — the baby of a female named Juno — has died, likely from grievous head and mouth injuries consistent with a vessel strike. The calf is the third North Atlantic right whale confirmed dead this year.

North Atlantic right whales are critically endangered. Too many are dying from ship strikes. This dire situation requires urgent action.

In 2022 NOAA Fisheries proposed crucial updates to a speed rule meant to safeguard these magnificent creatures from vessel strikes, a leading cause of their decline. But the agency still hasn't finalized the updates — due in part to pressure from industry.

With fewer than 360 North Atlantic right whales left, every second counts. These animals can't afford any more federal foot-dragging.

NOAA Fisheries is part of the Department of Commerce, which can push the agency to finally finish the lifesaving updates. But it'll take a push from you to make the department act.

North Atlantic right whales need strong leadership from the very top.

Urge Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to make sure NOAA Fisheries swiftly finalizes the speed rule updates to protect these whales.
